Tram conductor takes me for a free ride

I am from Mumbai and went to kolkata to visit my brother. Travelling in the tram was a novelty.
The tram conductor sensed i was not a local. He took 5 rupees from me and did not issue me the ticket. I was waiting for the ticket thinking He will give me later with the change. When my stop cam, he smiled slyly and said I can get down. So I got down without getting a ticket or my change back? Looking at his poor dress and demenour, I did not have courage to ask for the ticket. That incidesnt stayed with me for a long time. At one hand I was feeling pity for his condition and maybe his poor pay and on other hand I feel cheated.
