I am a practicing Chartered Accountant. I am aghast and appalled to see the level of corruption in the commercial taxes department (VAT) in Bangalore. While the Government, in all good intent, introduced the system of e-registration to reduce interaction between Government officials and traders, and thereby eliminate harassment/corruption, the officers in the VAT department are finding new and novel ways to remain corrupt.
I had to pay a bribe of Rs.4,000/- to the officials in the department. The most brazen of officials was the Assistant Commissioner. He made me feel that it was his birthright to demand a bribe and my solemn duty to make the payment.
