I won the battle for long arguments and detention for 45 mins

Reported on August 19, 2011 from Mumbai , Maharashtra  ι Report #31652

I was a first time traveller returning back to India from London. The customs officer noticed that and asked me to oprn the luggages. They searched literally everything and found a camera which I was using for personal use. The officer said you have not declared this and what is the guarantee that its worth is under limits? I replied back saying it is for personal use and showed the bill from London which included the local VAT. He then started arguing that I can be detained for not declaring. I didnt fear and told him to do as per law and said I definitely know that what I have done has not violated any laws. He then kept on saying stories and said NRIs will not have respect to India and they dont pay taxes and so on. I returned back saying respect to India should come not only in paying taxes but from learing and contributing to the country in various good forms. The argument went for 30 more mins and he was able to understand me that I am not going to offer him anything. he finally got disgusted @ me and said I am good and thats why I am leaving you. He said I am returning your camera because he seems to be good! I told him thanks saying I still want you to do your duty as per law and thanks again since I think you are now doing correctly.
